10 Nov 1900·British Colonies

On 10 November 1900, the first stamps inscribed “Turks and Caicos Islands” were issued. Before that, stamps had simply read “Turks Islands”, despite both island groups being administered together from Jamaica since 1867. Printed by De La Rue in London, the first set included 9 monocolour values from ½d to 3s. The lower denominations used Crown CA watermark paper, while the 2 and 3 shillings were printed on Crown CC paper and in a larger format. The design shows a sailing ship and local salt-raking scene, a direct nod to the industry that shaped the islands’ economy for decades. Not a new colony, but a small philatelic correction bringing the Caicos Islands onto the stamps for the first time.
